January goals

Happy New Year! … or fake new year, or modern civilization NY. Maybe we can celebrate the new year again in the Spring. I find that’s when the true renewal and rebirth happens anyway. But regardless, it’s now 2026. Time flies.

I’ll save the whole “it’s a time to reflect on the year that just past… bla bla” speech- i’ve already turned the page. It’s January 2nd and I’m already liking my vibe.

I am not a fan of “ NY’s resolutions”. They too often never stick. But I’m doing it anyway. Actually, i’m just focussing on January for now.

Several goals going on.

“I absolutely love all the toxicity and politics and fake ai videos on social media” said no-one ever! I decided to give January a break from socials. Maybe even February. To me, no social media means no death scrolling on facebook, instagram and X. I deleted the apps off my phone.

It’s only day one and I have to admit: I love it. I realized today how it consumes my brain and time. As I was working on a painting, I kept thinking many times- “I have to take a picture and do a story” .. then quickly realized, “nope, can’t”. I don’t know if you realize but me not posting saves me about 2 hours of nonsense. (Half an hour to create the post, another hour of accidentally wandering my attention to scrolling mindlessly and another hour throughout the rest of the day looking at likes and replies.) For what?

For. What.

Seems I have lots to say today and it’s already too long of a post. Are you still reading?

So …

1. No socials

2. 31 in 31 January challenge, scaled down from last year.

3. Writing morning pages.

4. Tightening up on Health (food, exercise).

2 minutes figure gesture drawings practice

For this year’s 31 day challenge, I decided to commit myself to shorter practices (as opposed to 3-4 hours paintings like last year. )

I don’t sketch enough. This forces me to sit down and play with different mediums (chalk, markers, pens, watercolor). It’s an opportunity to focus on the essence, not perfection. The quick approach should help loosen up my drawing style- hopefully improving my lines and flow and ultimately helping me build my confidence in drawing. Anyway…here’s hoping I get an idea of how to draw by day 31.

What about you? Are you working on your selves this January? What’s on your list?
