Cherishing Christmas Memories: Family and Togetherness

As I was cutting some vegetables and listening to some instrumental Christmas music, it made me reminisce on past memories from this time of year. One of my favorite is our family shopping trips to Moncton, particularly at Highfield Square.

“Is that the one with Eaton’s in it?” I would ask.

There was something special about that place during the holidays. It was the Christmas music and the decorations. The escalators in Eatons were especially made for kids to run in the opposite direction- or so I thought.

“We’ll meet at the entry of Eatons at 4:30”. We would each go our own way, but most of the time, I would tag along with mam.

I remember she used to walk so close to me, we would touch. I felt I needed my space, so I tried taking my distance. We would end up zigzagging the corridor as we walked through the mall. LOL. I wonder if she ever realized what was happening.

I remember pointing out nice clothes for her and she would be impress at how well I knew her taste. “Mam, why do you have to touch every single piece of clothing you see?” She would smile and tell me it was to get the feel of the material. Annoyed, I would pull her away. I thought she was weird. I do the same now and laugh at myself, apologizing to mom up there.

I think Christmas is a time of joy and togetherness. It reminds us that time is precious and that family and friends are most important. It’s a magical time to cherish the relationships with those who bring joy and laughter to our lives.

Though my heart is scarred, I feel lucky that I can now happily cherish those memories during the holidays. But this time of year can also be a haunting reminder of absence and loneliness to those not surrounded by loved ones, for whatever reasons. I have no advice on how to ease those heartaches. But I know that it’s okay to not be okay. Reach out, listen and cherish the ones who care for you.

Lets spread love and kindness this Christmas and may we strive to be the light that shines brightest for those who need it most.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
